Happening now: Johnny Depp and Tim Burton are in Tokyo for the premiere of Alice in Wonderland.  The film again dominated  the box office over the weekend, as it took in $34.5 million to remain the No. 1 movie for a third consecutive weekend.  Its domestic haul is $265.7 million after just 17 days in theaters.

Depp said at a press conference: “For me to play the Hatter wasn’t a great stretch by any means,” he said, laughing. “In a sense I think the character was kind of already blooming inside, ready to show its face.”  Depp was due to fly out later today to return to Italy, where he’s filming The Tourist with Angelina Jolie.

Alice in Wonderland breaks 3D record

Posted by yangga.8 | Movies | Wednesday 10 March 2010 3:33 am

Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland has entered the North America box office at number one, with record opening takings for a 3D movie.

The film, starring Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter, raked in $116.3m (£76.8m), beating the first weekend performance of blockbuster Avatar.

Police thriller Brooklyn’s Finest made its debut at two with a relatively small return of $13.5m (£8.9m).

Shutter Island by Martin Scorsese fell from the top spot to number three.

Alice in Wonderland, which had been expected by makers Disney to rake in closer to $70m (£46.2m), also set a record for the highest first weekend earner in the first three months of any year.

The benchmark was previously set by Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ in 2004.

Tim Burton’s interpretation of the Lewis Carroll classic benefited from being awarded a child-friendly certificate in the US, despite some objections to the presence of a smoking caterpillar in the film.

3D blockbuster Avatar - which lost out on the Oscar for best picture on Sunday - maintained its box office presence for a 12th week in North America, in fifth place.

In the US and Canada alone, it has made more than $720m (£475m) since its first week of release.

Public Enemies: Starring Johnny Depp and Christian Bale

Posted by yangga.8 | Movies | Wednesday 22 July 2009 2:06 am

Plot Summary: In the action-thriller “Public Enemies”, acclaimed filmmaker Michael Mann directs Johnny Depp, Christian Bale and Academy Award winner Marion Cotillard in the story of legendary Depression-era outlaw John Dillinger (Depp) - the charismatic bank robber whose lightning raids made him the number one target of J. Edgar Hoover’s fledging FBI and its top agent. Melvin Purvis (Bale), and a folk hero to much of the downtrodden public.

No one could stop Dillinger and his gang. No jail could hold him. His charm and audacious jailbreaks endeared him to almost everyone—from his girlfriend Billie Frechette (Cotillard) to an American public who had no sympathy for the banks that had plunged the country into the Depression.

But while the adventures of Dillinger’s gang—later including the sociopathic Baby Face Nelson (Stephen Graham) and Alvin Karpis (Giovanni Ribisi)—thrilled many, Hoover (Billy Crudup) hit on the idea of exploiting the outlaw’s capture as a way to elevate his Bureau of Investigation into the national police force that became the FBI. He made Dillinger America’s first Public Enemy Number One and sent in Purvis, the dashing “Clark Gable of the FBI.”

However, Dillinger and his gang outwitted and outgunned Purvis’ men in wild chases and shootouts. Only after importing a crew of Western ex-lawmen (newly baptized as agents) and orchestrating epic betrayals—from the infamous “Lady in Red” to the Chicago crime boss Frank Nitti—were Purvis, the FBI and their new crew of gunfighters able to close in on Dillinger. WHOAA!!! Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) and Batman (Christian Bale) combined into one exceptional movie! Awesome cast. I’m definitely not gonna miss this one! It’s about time I’d see Johnny Depp playing the role of a real character. He did Jack Sparrow and Willy Wonka just because he wanted to make some films that his kids could actually watch. Sweet.. I really love Johnny Depp! He is simply the best. I also like Christian Bale, especially the shoot-outs he did in the Equilibrium movie way back in 2002. This movie is definitely a killer!
