‘New Moon’ wolfs down $140.7M in opening weekend

LOS ANGELES – The vampire romance “The Twilight Sage: New Moon” sucked up $140.7 million in its first three days and pulled in a total of $258.8 million worldwide, according to studio estimates Sunday.

The No. 1 domestic debut for Summit Entertainment’s “New Moon” was more than twice the $69.6 million haul over the same weekend last year for “Twilight,” the first in the franchise based on Stephenie Meyer’s novels.

“Obviously, with the success of ‘Twilight’ itself, sequels being what they are will generate X-number of dollars more, particularly if it’s a satisfying sequel,” said Richie Fay, head of distribution for Summit.

“New Moon” placed third on the all-time domestic chart behind last year’s $158.4 million opening weekend for the Batman blockbuster “The Dark Knight” and 2007’s $151.1 million haul for “Spider-Man 3.”

Among the top-10 all-time openings, “New Moon” is the only one that came outside of Hollywood’s busiest time, the summer season. The movie adaptation of Meyer’s next “Twilight” chapter, “Eclipse,” arrives in the heart of summer, next June 30.

Twilight Movie Review

Posted by yangga.8 | Movies | Thursday 4 December 2008 4:07 am

I have finally watched Twilight last Monday night. You might notice that my first post on this blog was about the coming out of this movie and bragged about my being a vampire fan. When I saw the trailer, I already knew that it was going to be a typical love story but with some bloody twists. And I was definitely right. Their love story was quite as passionate as Romeo and Juliet’s, but in a modernized and action-packed manner.

Edward Cullen was a very stunning vegetarian vampire and hasn’t aged for over a hundred years. Bella Swan was an eccentric girl and a bit different. They are unconditionally and passionately in love with each other in spite of their difference in species. Bella’s life has been on danger but Edward is never out of sight to protect her.

“Surely it was a good way to die, in the place of someone else, someone I loved. Noble, even. That ought to count for something.– Bella Swan, Twilight

I liked the story, especially because there are vampires involved in it. I had always admired vampires and lycans. I was expecting more action on this movie and I was quite disappointed how easy things went well in the end. I will be expecting more action on the next sequel, though. *wink*. But this movie so far is a remarkable work, especially by the actors (I love Edward … *giggles*).

A story of an ultimate forbidden love affair between a Vampire and a Mortal...
A story of an ultimate forbidden love affair between a Vampire and a Mortal… ^^

Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) has always been a bit different, never caring about or fitting in with the trendy girls at her Phoenix, Arizona high school. When her mother Renee (Sarah Clarke) remarries and decides to move with her new husband to Florida, and Bella decides to go live with her father, Charlie (Billy Burke), in the rainy little town of Forks, Washington, she doesn’t expect anything to change. Then she meets the mysterious and dazzlingly beautiful Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), a boy unlike any she’s ever met. Intelligent and witty, his piercing eyes see straight into her soul. Soon, Bella and Edward are swept up in a passionate and decidedly unorthodox romance. Edward can run faster than any cheetah, he can stop a moving car with his bare hands, and he hasn’t aged since 1918. Most importantly, he’s a vampire. Like all vampires, he’s immortal. He doesn’t drink human blood (they’re vampire “vegetarians”), which is rare among the vampire population. Instead, they go on regular “hiking” trips, where they feed on prey such as grizzly bears and mountain lions. For Edward, Bella is the thing he has waited ninety years for - a soul mate. But the closer they get, the more Edward must struggle to resist the primal pull of her scent, which could send him into an uncontrollable frenzy. And what will they do when James (Cam Gigandet), Laurent (Edi Gathegi), and Victoria (Rachel Lefevre) come into town and James sets his sights on Bella? Will true love prevail when Edward is forced to save her life and conquer his thirst? The true question is, When you can live forever, what do you live for?

Hiya! This movie is based on the infamous novel written by Stephenie Meyer. I personally have not read the book yet though..

I have always been a big fan of Vampire movies — from the orginal Dracula series to The Vampire Chronicles, Van Helsing, Underworld, Ultraviolet, Blade I-III and the newest releases such as Twilight. I wonder what makes this movie different.. It could be the story that just bits me to my nerves. Vampires have always been passionate lovers especially when they begin falling for their prey. They’re not just blood-sucking creatures but even more sensible than a true human being, aka mortals.

“When other little girls wanted to be ballet dancers, I kind of wanted to be a VAMPIRE.” =)
